“Trump has become the No1 Republican candidate for the presidential election but his grandad would’ve been regarded as an undesirable by his Bible-reading support”
Loudmouth Donald Trump is rarely silent – except on the subject of his dodgy grandpa.
Against the odds, and with no experience in political posts, Trump has become the No1 Republican candidate for the US presidential election.
To get there he has been happy to slag off women and Muslims. And to win votes he has vowed to build a wall to keep immigrants out of the US.
What he doesn’t shout about is that his grandad was a poor economic migrant – Friedrich Drumpf. And he was a man who Trump’s Bible-reading support would regard as an undesirable.
Born in Germany, old man Trumpf dodged army service, ran brothels and failed to pay the taxman his dues.
Donald has virtually disowned him by pretending his family came from Sweden.
Drumpf was a fortune-seeking huckster of a type that abounded in 19th century America.
He landed in New York in 1885 at the age of 16, at which point Drumpf became Trumpf on his immigration papers.
Sometime after that the family dropped the final f in their name and became Trump.
The young immigrant had trained as a barber in Kallstadt, south-west Germany, and made a living cutting hair for six years in New York.
So he would probably have taken exception to his grandson sporting a hairstyle like a guinea pig’s bottom.
But Friedrich had bigger ideas than cutting hair. Gold fever was gripping America and he headed West – not to mine gold but to extract it from the miners.
He opened his first establishment, a saloon and brothel called the Poodle Dog, in Seattle, Washington State.
Then when the Klondike goldrush began in 1896, 100,000 miners headed for the Yukon in north-west Canada – and Trumpf went with them.
He opened the New Arctic Restaurant and Hotel in the town of Bennett, actually a cluster of tents on the Dead Horse Trail.
Money rolled in and Trumpf swapped his canvas eaterie for a two-story building.
It offered meals of caribou and horse meat – with sex available for afters. He added salmon, duck, ptarmigan, grouse, goose, swan, goat, sheep, rabbit and squirrel to the menu.
And customers could enjoy fresh fruit – redcurrants, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and cranberries.
Prospectors could settle their bills in gold dust or nuggets. A set of scales sat on the bar for the purpose.
But not everyone found the red light side of Trump’s business appetising.
An indignant letter to the Yukon Sun newspaper read: “For single men, the Arctic has excellent accommodations and the best restaurant in Bennett.
“But I would not advise respectable women to go there to sleep. They are liable to hear that which would be repugnant to their feelings, uttered by the depraved of their own sex.”
Trumpf next opened a round-the-clock saloon in the railroad town of Whitehorse, where he served 3,000 meals a day.
His biographer Gwenda Blair says: “Grandpa Trump built his restaurants on land he did not own. It was the Wild West. It was wide open, very raw, lots of single men desperately trying to find gold – and prostitutes .
“His restaurants had liquor, food and access to women.”
Trumpf built cubicles draped in heavy curtains, where his girls could entertain clients in privacy.
But by 1901 things were getting too hot as the Canadian Mounties began cracking down on prostitution, gambling and illegal booze.
Trumpf returned to Germany and married his former neighbour Elizabeth Christ.
He planned to settle down – but the German authorities had other ideas.
Trumpf had avoided military service when he emigrated.
There was also the not inconsiderable matter of tax he had failed to pay.
His repatriation application was turned down and he was sent back to America with his wife.
A son, Fred, was born in 1905 and he became Donald’s father.
Grandpa Friedrich died in the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 at the age of 49. By that time he had become Frederick Trump.
He left the equivalent of £400,000 in today’s money and in part it was the proceeds of vice.
His widow and son invested it in property and built a £300million empire which was the foundation of the present day Trump’s fortune. The Donald reckons it now stands at £10billion.
But he would rather talk about his mother’s Scottish roots on the Isle of Lewis than his German ones.
Gwenda Blair claims Trump – whose third wife Melania was a Slovenian immigrant – takes after his father and grandfather. She says: “They are people who would do anything to get ahead and win.
“They are enormously tenacious, never give up and are willing to push the envelope, bend the rules and find the loopholes.”
Until recently it seemed inconceivable that a bellowing racist could win the Republican nomination, let alone the presidency.
But after Trump took seven of 11 states in last week’s Super Tuesday primaries the first seems probable, the second possible.
Only Hillary Clinton, now set to be confirmed as the Democrat candidate, can stop him. By countering Trump’s message of hate, she may attract reasonable voters, including some Republicans.
Trump, 69, is a dirty right-wing streetfighter who would say anything to get to the White House.
He promised a blanket ban on Muslim immigrants and has advocated torture and the killing of families of terrorists.
Unscrupulous? Well it’s in his blood after all.
